Progress towards clean water

The dairy industry is making progress towards clean water, according to the Sustainable Business Council.

Dairy companies today reported on the first year of operation of the Sustainable Dairying Water Accord, the voluntary dairy industry commitment to improving water quality.

Sustainable Business Council Executive Director Penny Nelson said it was good to see the dairy industry being transparent and accountable for what has been achieved a year into the accord.

“The report shows there are still remaining challenges, but meaningful progress is being made.”

Penny Nelson said Fonterra, a member of the Sustainable Business Council, was playing a vital role in supporting the accord.

“Fonterra has built environmental performance into contractual agreements with its suppliers and all farmers are audited against it, with one-on-one support given to farmers where improvements are needed.

“The company has also developed user-friendly information and support systems to help farmers with nitrogen management, with information reports showing individual farmers’ nitrogen fixing levels, nitrogen leaching risk, nitrogen conversion efficiency and the key variables affecting these outcomes.

“We support the work by Fonterra and other dairy companies and farmers throughout New Zealand towards improved environmental performance.”
