New Zealand continues to score highly in an international survey of energy sustainability.

The World Energy Council’s Energy Sustainability Index ranks countries on availability, security, affordability and quality of energy, and amount of energy from low-carbon and renewable sources.

In this year’s index the top ten ranked countries are Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, UK, Canada, Norway, New Zealand, Spain and France.

New Zealand has achieved 8th place through sound management of energy supply, infrastructure reliability and the ability of energy providers to meet future demand, and has been recognised as one of the ‘leaders of the pack’.

The BusinessNZ Energy Council, the World Energy Council’s New Zealand member committee, has welcomed the report which reflects New Zealand’s relatively sound energy management policies and high levels of renewable energy.

“Business success and a growing standard of living depend on an affordable, secure supply of energy,” said BusinessNZ Energy Council Chairman Rob Whitney.

“New Zealand exhibits strong, well-balanced performance in energy management. Once again our economic growth has outpaced our energy growth, as our energy productivity continues to improve. While New Zealand can always improve its performance in parts of the energy sector, this ranking is a welcome acknowledgement of our success in energy management generally,” Mr Whitney said.
