Easier trans-Tasman travel needed

Four key reforms would significantly boost trans-Tasman travel, says the Australia New Zealand Leadership Forum.

The Forum has long advocated making trans-Tasman flights equivalent to domestic Australian and New Zealand flights, to boost airline and tourism revenues in both countries and enhance trade between the two.

Now the Australian Tourism and Transport Forum has called for four reforms to help achieve this goal.  In a policy paper to be launched this afternoon, TTF recommends cutting travel times at major Australian airports, halving Australia’s

Passenger Movement Charge, opening up more Australian regional airports to trans-Tasman flights, and introducing a common Australian/New Zealand visa to encourage Asian visitors to combine both countries in one trip.

Forum Australian Co-Chair Rod McGeoch says the Forum strongly supports TTF’s recommendations.

“Removing the barriers to trans-Tasman travel would significantly enhance trade and relations between our two countries and would position both of us to do more business with Asia.

“We urge action by the Australian Government to make these recommendations a reality.”
