The Furniture Industry Training Organisation is the recognised ITO for the Furniture Industry under the provisions of the Industry Training Act 1992.

Aim

The Furniture ITO aims to increase participation in structured training within the industry, and to develop and maintain an internationally competitive, highly - skilled workforce which is capable of manufacturing world - class products.

Objectives

  • To develop new training structures and systems for the industry to meet its present and future needs and which meet the quality criteria of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
  • To promote training in the industry and investment in people.
  • To represent the interests of the industry at a National Level on training issues.
  • To administer structured training systems on industry's behalf.
  • To provide support services to industry on training issues.


Services

  • Defining National Qualifications for all sectors of the industry to meet the requirements of the industry and the NZ Qualifications Authority (NZQA).
  • Facilitating the development of new training programmes to meet competency standards.
  • Responding to customer requests for new types of training.
  • Improving training programmes and accrediting furniture training providers in association with NZQA.
  • Negotiating contracts and purchasing training from tertiary institutions on behalf of industry.
  • Marketing FITO's training system and services to industry.
  • Administering FITO's nationally recognised training programme including the assessment of trainees and monitoring training quality standards.
  • Discemination training-related information to the furniture industry.

Qualifications

FITO offers traineeships in the following registered national qualifications:
  • National Diploma in Furniture Level 6 (Management)
  • National Diploma in Furniture Level 5 (Supervision)
  • National Certificate Level 4 Furniture Making
  • National Certificate Level 4 Upholstery
  • National Certificate Level 4 Furniture Finishing
  • National Certificate Level 3 Bedding Manufacture
  • National Certificate Level 3 Steel Furniture Making
  • National Certificate Level 2 General Furniture Making (Introductory)


Training Programme

Training is competency based (not time based) and is linked to unit standards on the National Qualifications Framework.

Trainee Assessment

Trainees are assessed on-job for competence against industry unit standards by registered furniture industry assessors.

Training Delivery

Furniture Skills training is delivered on job by the employer using work place training resources (modules) which explain the skills to be learned and how well. Non- furniture skills (eg Communication skills, literacy and numeracy skills) are delivered off job at polytechnics, or through Private Training Establishments. Government assistance is available for off-job training.
