Innovation programme welcome

Business NZ has welcomed an innovation internship programme announced by the Government today.

The programme will contribute funding to help companies undertake research and development by employing postgraduate science, technology and engineering students.

Business NZ Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly said innovation was crucially important for New Zealand to be able to achieve higher levels of productivity and growth, and this assumed even more importance given current economic conditions.

“As well as benefiting individual companies and researchers, this scheme will also help improve industry-university links generally and I would urge relevant companies to take up this opportunity,” Mr O’Reilly said.

He said this was a positive outcome from one of the work streams of the Jobs Summit held earlier this year.
